Imagination:
“Imagination is the highest kite that one can fly.”
(Lauren Bacall, By Myself, Jonathan Cape, London, 1979)
Indifference: “Let man lose his faculty of indifference: he will become a virtual assassin. Let him now make God out of a transformed idea – the consequences are incalculable. ” (Emil Cioran (1911-1995), philosopher, writer) (“Précis de decomposition”)

Poetry in Translation (CCCLXXIII), ROMANIA, Adrian MUNTEANU (b. 1948, Brasov, Romania): “Sonet”, “Sonnet”
January 19th, 2016 · 1 Comment · Books, Famous People, International Media, OPINION, PEOPLE, Poetry, quotations, Translations
My heart is melting, by the candlelight,
I’m just a pitiful, stray dog, without repose…
My body, torn to pieces, couldn’t fight.
My sins, which are untold, are worthless dross…
I’m loath and fearful of the coming spite:
You are my only Hope, my Holy Cross.

Poetry in Translation (CCCXLIV), James FENTON (n. 1949, Lincoln), UK/ENGLAND: “The Song of the General”, “Cântecul Generalului”

James FENTON
I serve an unjust lord.
Exile is an early tomb.
The heart bleeds dark.
Death is a journey home.
By the bright dew on the hill,
By the sharp blade of the moon,
I shall wake my grieving men.
I shall make that journey soon
“Cântecul Generalului”
Înrolat în război, de pripas,
Exilul îi pare-un mormânt
Inima-i e sângerândă s-ajungă devreme acas’…
Fiindcă Moartea-i de veghe, mergând.
Luna luceşte pe spadă.
Roua, pe frunza deasă
Voi deştepta soldaţii mei, în grabă;
Curând mă voi întoarce-acasă.

Poetry in Translation (CCCXIX): Rudyard KIPLING (1865-1936), ENGLAND – “Mother o’ Mine”, “O, mamă, dulce mamă!”

If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole,
Mother o’ mine, O, mother o’ mine!
Dac-al meu trup şi suflet în gheenă ar fi,
Numai ruga ta, mamă, m-ar putea mântui.
O, mamă, dulce mamă!

Poetry in Translation, (CCXCI), Simin BEHBAHANI (1927-2014), IRAN: “My Country, I Will Build You Again”, “Țara mea, te voi reclădi”

There still burns a fire in my breast
to keep undiminished the warmth of kinship
I feel for my people.
Once more you will grant me strength,
though my poems have settled in blood.
Once more I will build you with my life,
though it be beyond my means.

Poetry in Translation (CCXXVIII): Maurice MAETERLINCK, (1862-1949), BELGIUM, “Heures ternes ”, “Stagnant hours ”, “Ore amorţite”
November 25th, 2013 · Comments Off on Poetry in Translation (CCXXVIII): Maurice MAETERLINCK, (1862-1949), BELGIUM, “Heures ternes ”, “Stagnant hours ”, “Ore amorţite” · PEOPLE, Poetry, quotations, Translations
Ore amorţite
(Maurice Maeterlinck)
Aici sunt doruri ce se-ntrec
Prin gânduri de bătrâni ce mor
Cu alte visuri, care trec
În zile lungi, tânjind de dor.
Unde-om afla vre-un cer senin,
Când nu vom mai găsi cumva
În cale, spre un nou destin
A infinitului, vre-o stea?
În hohot sună valea toată
De victime abandonate,
Ca miei sacrificaţi de soartă…
Ai milă Doamne păcate!
Doar eu aştept când ziua trece
Să mă trezesc din somn odată,
Ca să adăst in noaptea rece,
Să îmi îngheţe fiinţa toată.
