IN MEMORIAM
We shall remain prostrate by Gravity
And our latent self-esteem,
As we will lose all our levity
And the professional pipe dream…
Don’t cry, you, milligal and lonely oersted,
As the old man died, with alacrity.
Therefore, we shall stampede, in earnest,
To grab his seat, at the Academy.
But, mindful of the world’s Ecology,
We’ll mummify his body for the Nations,
To be preserved for future generations
And be admired by Humanity.
And as we’ll find him pickled, in preserves,
Displayed amongst the vile orangutans,
We shall forgive him his shenanigans,
To grant him the respect that he deserves.

Poetry in Translation (CCCXVIII): Marjorie Lowry Christie PICKTHALL (1883-1922), ENGLAND/CANADA – “Marching Men”, “Soldaţi”

Under the level winter sky
I saw a thousand Christs go by.
They sang an idle song and free
As they went up to calvary.
Careless of eye and coarse of lip,
They marched in holiest fellowship.
That heaven might heal the world, they gave
Their earth-born dreams to deck the grave.
With souls unpurged and steadfast breath
They supped the sacrament of death.
And for each one, far off, apart,
Seven swords have rent a woman’s heart.
În iarna cerului de plumb,
Văzut-am mii de sfinţi trecând.
Cântau un imn să uite-amarul,
Purtând, cu fruntea sus, calvarul.

Poetry in Translation (CCCXVII): Constantin ROMAN (b. 1941), ROMANIA/ENGLAND – “Abbot Kir”, “Abatele Kir“

Epigram
Our good Abbot Kir
Had a dream rather queer,
Even though, he agreed, somewhat vain…
To his flute of Champagne
He would add some cassis
And he found the result utter bliss!
Când Abatele Kir, de acel renume,
S-a trezit din vis,
Turnând şampanie-n casis,
N-a crezut de fel,
Că acest cocktail,
Îi va duce o faimă în lume.

You give me the pleasure of your eyes, face, flesh, as we pass- you
take of my beard, breast, hands, in return,
I am not to speak to you- I am to think of you when I sit alone, or
wake at night alone,
I am to wait- I do not doubt I am to meet you again,
I am to see to it that I do not lose you

Savantul a murit deunăzi:
De-atât amar, cu toţi ne-om repezi
Să-i luam fotoliul la Academie.
Dar plini de scrupule pentru Ecologie
L-om împăia, ca să nu îl uităm:
Cadavrul lui Antipa o să-l dăm,
Ca să–l admire marea Omenire.
Şi-acolo regăsindu-l, într-un fine,
Printre strămoşii noştri troglodiţi
Vom adăsta cu toţi, înmărmuriţi,
De acolada ce i se cuvine.

Ballad of the Ages
Wilhelm BUSCH, Theodore FONTANE & Eugen ROTH
When you’re a kid, your life’s a breeze
A time to do just as you please
But being small you’re much too keen
To grow into a sulky teen.
At eighteen, though, you blithely say
By twenty I’ll be tired and grey
But when you duly reach that stage
Why, thirty seems a ripe old age.
And in your fourties what you fear
Is tour approaching fiftieth year
But when it comes, lo and behold…
You really don’t feel all that old!

“Vreau, suflete, să mă dezbar de tine
şi să trăiesc ca pomii de pe vale,
cu flori în locul gândurilor tale,
o viaţă fără rău şi fără bine.”
“Dear Soul, I’d gladly do without your swings of mood,
To live among the trees, down in the valley
And smell the bloom, rather than hear your parley –
A life unsullied by the Bad, or Good.”

Five Book Reviews: Memoirs of Adrian Marino, Gheorghe Rafael-Stefanescu, Boris Johnson, George Orwell and Joseph Stalin
May 25th, 2014 · No Comments · Books, History, International Media, OPINION, PEOPLE, quotations, Reviews
This is the most meaningful metamorphosis in Orwell’s life, during which time he realizes the underlying workings of Communism. Such ideology he ditches to refute it completely in his future best sellers: “1984” and “The Animal Farm”. We find Orwell, as an intelligent man, flirting with the left-wing dictatorship (and the Civil War) only to reject it without a right of appeal. As an observer, living his life’s experience at first hand, this is a compelling experience
It is precisely the stuff for which George Orwell’s works were completely banned in Eastern Europe, to the last days of Communism.

Michelangelo BUONARROTI (1475-1564)
XLVII
Când dragostea-i mereu înflăcărată,
Mai mult decât credeam, în tinereţe,
Regret adânc vapaia-ntârziată,
Ce mă încearcă, greu, la bătrâneţe.
Căci cerul este crud, când, sub văpaie,
Îi cere inimii, ce-abea că mai rezistă,
Ca bătrâneţea să îmi poarte crucea,
Iubind o fiinţă, cu-o privire tristă.
Dar poate-atunci când soarele apune,
Iar viaţia-i la sfârşit, putea-voi spune,
Că-n noapte, voi trăi o umbră vie.
Căci, în amurgul vieţii, dorul ştie
Cum focul mă va pune la-ncercare:
Iubite, fă din noapte-o sărbătoare!
