(b. 1948, Brasov)
“The Sonnet – an Eternal Tease”

I write a sonnet as a constant tease –
Its rules are there to liberate my dream,
To be myself and follow, as I seem
To play with empty words of love and ease.

Poetry in Translation (CCCLXXIII), ROMANIA, Adrian MUNTEANU (b. 1948, Brasov, Romania): “Sonet”, “Sonnet”

My heart is melting, by the candlelight,
I’m just a pitiful, stray dog, without repose…
My body, torn to pieces, couldn’t fight.

My sins, which are untold, are worthless dross…
I’m loath and fearful of the coming spite:
You are my only Hope, my Holy Cross.

Virgil Gheorghiu, Sonet (fragment):
Asemeni lui, purtând un vis în minte,
Poeţii îşi ating desăvârşirea
Zidind iubirea vieţii în cuvinte.
Now minstrels sing his praise and utter Glory
The good and great will bring his fame abroad:
His monument to Love enshrines his Story.

The poplar rages gusts of wind against my window,
Alas, it can no longer our ancient tongue avenge.
As a fakir, whose act to mesmerize is over,
The most docile of cobras now seeks to take revenge.

Caligula, omnipotent
Rode his horse to Parliament.
Ceausescu more sinister
Made his ass a Minister.

You, Soviet soldier, Soviet soldier,
Why are you perched so high, I wonder?
Because you conquered us, as well,
Or that your feet may stink like hell?

Păstorel Teodoreanu

Toi soviétique, si haut perché,
Pourquoi es-tu si isolé?
Serait-ce par marque de respect? s
Ou pour ne pas sentir tes pieds?
